The 1st year (senior undergraduate year) is characterized by a strong core curriculum in science, which are the bases of engineering (solids and fluids mechanics, electronics, computer science, applied mathematics, chemistry, etc.).
The emphasis is placed on acquiring an open scientific mind, and expertise in modelling, resolution methodologies and the use of fundamental tools. It is completed by substantial scientific electives, with the objective of making the students discover a scientific or technological field away from a traditional academic approach.
The 2nd year (1st year of the Master’s part of the curriculum) starts with two and a half months of core science courses offered to students who have not spent their last undergraduate year at ENSTA ParisTech to master the working tools which will be needed further on. Students progressively specialize by taking a major according to their centres of interest and professional projects.
Education through research
Starting the first semester, students choose from among several elective modules. These modules provide knowledge that is applied during the Research Project, a research internship which lasts between two and four months as from early May.
The 3rd – final – year (2nd year of the Master’s part of the curriculum) is dedicated to advanced specialisation courses focused on industrial applications. In this way, in addition to the general engineering training, the students will acquire an engineering profile targeted at a particular economic sector or field of know-how, in which they will generally begin their career.
A study trip is often organised, as a way of obtaining a concrete picture of the relevant profession.
Students have also the possibility to follow the final year of the MSc. programme of a partner university in Paris (Research-oriented MSc. or Profesional-oriented MSc.) in parallel of their final year at ENSTA ParisTech.
The scientific training is completed by language, culture, law and economics courses. There is global a balance in teaching hours between scientific and technological subjects (about 700 hours), and economics, the humanities and languages, which account for about 420 hours in total.
Teaching at ENSTA ParisTech also includes a number of internships and practical projects. In the course of certain subjects, students have to perform project work, mostly as a team. The Personal Laboratory Project, at the end of the 2nd year of the programme (1st year of MSc.), is an initiation into research. Students can take a sabbatical year to spend a one-year internship in industry between the 2nd and 3rd (final) years of the programme.
Final Degree Project:
The Diplôme d’Ingénieur curriculum ends with a final project which takes place during the entire second semester. It usually takes the form of a corporate internship as a junior engineer in a company, in France or abroad. It may also take the form of an advanced laboratory project in a research institute.
